Hawaiian Green Sea turtles, or Honu, are native to Hawaii. They are the largest hard-shelled turtle in the world. Reaching lengths up to four feet and weighing over 300 pounds. Honu mainly eats algae and seagrasses (Limu), which turn their fat layer green and gives them their common name. With lungs two-thirds as long as their caprice (upper shell), it is believed they can stay underwater for many hours.
The name nēnē comes from it's soft call. Based on fossil DNA, all Hawaiian goose species are closely related to the giant Canada goose, and are thought to have migrated to the islands over 500,000 years ago. They are the rarest goose in the world. It is also became the Hawaii State bird in 1957.
